Linux on the TuxScreen. |
What is a "TuxScreen"? It is a really cool Internet appliance that is available for only $99 + shipping, while supplies last! The device has:
Telephone + Speaker phone
StrongARM CPU running 191.7MHz.
7.7" diagonal Color LCD 640x480
Two PCMCIA type 1 slots
IR remote keyboard
These units were built as part of a collaborative effort between Lucent Technologies and Philips Semiconductor. The project was cancelled after the alliance was dissolved, leaving several thousand of these units on the surplus market. More information is on the TuxScreen site, my intention is to show HowTo install linux on this phone.
Play with the unit for a while to see what the Inferno o/s installed in the phone was like. It is not a bad system, just is incomplete: it will receive email, but won't send it, and the HTML browser renders some websites just terribly, others look fine. They never finished it?
Step 1: Install Inferno.
Step 2: Unprotect the Flash and install Blob.
Step 3: Install Linux
Step 4: Linux development environment
Step 5: Upgrade the mainboard to 32 Megabyte of DRAM
Step 6: Add an internal 10Gig IDE drive.
I have, so far, five of these units and one of them was cannibalized to make a StrongARM development board. (and another was toasted while attempting the first DRAM upgrade :-(
